The meaning of the word Orangery

In the 16th century, it became fashionable for European aristocrats to have collections of orange trees and other citruses. Back then, these collections of trees were called "Orangerie" in German (derived from the French word) and thus referred to the trees rather than to the building.

In those early days, these "orangeries" remained where they were planted. However, as soon as plant pots were introduced, the trees could be moved around. These trees satisfied the aristocrats' longing for surrounding themselves with exotic citruses and displaying an open spirit as well as an international orientation.

Thanks to various mythological associations with citrus trees and their faraway origin and therefore elevated price, these trees were perfect for representative purposes.
